BIRTH

I try to avoid any man-made objects or structures when photographing natural landscapes. Although in a few cases they may blend into their surroundings, more often than not they are just eyesores that make one wonder why do they exist in the first place, and wish you could just move away the building or the power line away, even if it is just long enough to take a picture. However, every rule has a few exceptions, and the photo above is one of them; there is a road on it, but in my opinion it does not matter. It takes a while to find it among the many colorful cliffs that dominate the picture, and it is also a heck of a road, the only one for tens of miles on either side, and one that provides wonderful photo opportunities on its own right.

The fortress like formation in the center of the photograph, which is called "The Castle", is located very close to the Capitol Reef National Park visitor center, and is the focus of many images taken directly from the parking lot or with the Fremont River on the foreground. It seems imposing from below, and it is difficult to think of a better name. I had photographed it several times, but this time I wanted something different, so I decided to photograph it from above against the backdrop of the Waterpocket Fold in the warm late afternoon light. It took me a while to hike up to the rim, but there I found my reward with the perspective of The Castle, the Fold, the Thousand Lake Mountain, and the clouds all aligned waiting for my shutter.
